The history of Andechs began long before the founding of the Benedictine monastery in 1455.

Originating from Duke Ernst, the name “Holy Mountain” is justified by the relic treasure kept here and whose origins trace back to the 10th century. We cordially welcome you to join us on a journey of discovery through the over-1000-year history of Andechs.

Here, one may also relive the rise and fall of significant ruling houses, as well as the centuries-old dedication of the Benedictines to pastoral care and their contributions to the cultural and economic development of Bavaria.

Moreover, Andechs Monastery offers a fascinating view into the history of art, culture, architecture, pilgrimage, and piety in Bavaria, from the Late Middle Ages until today.
