1L HB Hofbräuhaus München glass beer boot

A theory is that soldiers would pass around a boot filled with beer before going in battle against the enemy.  
The tradition dictates that one should flick the boot before and after drinking from it to bring good luck.  
A glass version of the boot was employed during World War II where American soldiers were introduced to the tradition.

The movie Beerfest (2006) popularized the theory that "the secret" to drinking out of a beer boot is to point the toe sideways.
